In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 149, Ogi Zenin delivers a ruthless act of betrayal. After grievously wounding his twin daughters, Maki and Mai, he drags their battered bodies through the Zenin estate. Full of contempt, he berates Maki for her inability to surpass him and dismisses her as a worthless failure, claiming she could never defeat a true sorcerer. Deeming them both stains on his legacy, Ogi throws them into a sealed room swarming with cursed spirits, intending for them to die there.
Despite her critical injuries, Mai awakens and sees that Maki is still barely alive. Driven by sisterly love, Mai uses the last of her strength to save her twin. In a dream-like realm resembling a beach, the sisters share a final, heartfelt moment. Mai reveals a painful truth: as twins, the world of jujutsu treats them as one entity — as long as Mai lives, Maki will never be able to achieve her full potential.
In an ultimate act of sacrifice, Mai transfers all of their remaining cursed energy into creating a single cursed tool and erases herself from existence, severing the bond that restricted Maki’s growth. Before fading, Mai makes Maki promise to “destroy everything.”
